New Rules for Riding e-Scooters in Valencia

The e-scooter phenomenon has come very quickly and now it is almost as common to see an e-scooter being ridden in Valencia as it is a bicycle. Many of the bike rentals is Valencia, including BikeAlao, now also rent e-scooters. Due to the explosion in popularity of e-scooters, local authorities had not had time to come up with any rules of movement for such vehicles, until now.

Accepting that e-scooters are a quick and environmentally friendly mode of transport, local authorities have created rules which will hopefully allow everybody to travel in harmony.

The first city to create rules in Spain was Barcelona, and now other cities are following suit. The city of Valencia councillor for sustainable mobility, Giuseppe Grezzi stated last week that he is preparing a new regulation for e-scooters. Grezzi said that the rule will be similar to the rules for bikes.

According to the planned regulations, e-scooters must be used on the bikes lanes and keep to a speed of 10 km per hour. If an e-scooter uses an area which is also pedestrian, then the scooter must be ridden slowly, giving pedestrians the right of way in all circumstances. In crowded areas the user must get off and either wheel the scooter, or carry it.

The regulation seems logical and now we can all use our e-scooters legally in Valencia.

An added twist in the tale came a few days ago. After a huge investment by Google and Uber, Valencia is the first city in Spain to have e-scooters available using an app which allows users to pick them up and drop them off anywhere. If you download the app, you are given the whereabouts of a number of e-scooters. The app charges the user 1 euro to unlock the scooter and a further 15 cents per minute during use.

It’s an interesting initiative and for short journeys, much like Valencia’s bike sharing scheme, it appears to be worthwhile. A 20-minute ride will cost about 4 euros, whereas an hour will cost 10, and five hours adds up to 45 euros.

Bike and scooter rental companies in Valencia such as BikeAlao charge 25 euros for 24 hours of e-scooter rental, including a charger for a full day rental.  So where the new initiative is convenient, it is far more economical to rent an e-scooter in Valencia with a rental company.

If you have an e-scooter, ride carefully and respectfully. If you don’t and would like to try one, you can rent an e-scooter in Valencia from BikeAlao from 10 euro. You can also rent a bike from 2 euro.
